ALTONA BY ELECTION
January 23rd, 2010
Well people of the west you are now being given a chance to make this a marginal seat. Whilst you sit in a safe seat you will get nothing done for your area. You will keep paying your taxes and paying taxes whilst the people in the marginal seats use your money and get their transport upgraded new trains better roads more money for hospitals more police more schools. So you are now being given a chance to make a difference to your area. If you fail to do so do not bother whinging and whining it will be your own fault.

Remember, this is an election year and if they vote in a Liberal candidate and the Liberal Party win the election all will be well.

Lori,
The Deputy Mayor of Hobsons Bay had a dummy spit in council this week about about all the things the Labour Party haven’t done in the local area. It’s all available on his website -
http://www.briffa.org/News.html
I bet labour wouldn’t want his comments to get into the papers next week.
Council’s motion to thank Lynne Kosky for “Outstanding Service”
(2 February 2010)
Notice of Motion by Cr Angela Altair -
“That council thank the retiring state member for Altona the Hon Lynne Kosky for her long and distinguished service to the city and express appreciation for her generous and important support and help on many Hobsons Bay Council projects over the years. That a Certificate of Appreciation or other mutually agreed and suitable gesture of formal recognition be presented to the retiring Minister.”
I moved to defer the motion for two weeks because I did not think council should be seen to support one political party over the others during a by-election. Just as the State Government should not interfere with council elections, the council should not interfere or potentially influence state government elections. Sadly, my deferral motion was lost so I was forced to enter the debate.
Statement in response to motion for Lynne Kosky by Cr Tony Briffa (Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Altona):
“I thank Cr Altair for raising this motion. It shows democracy and free speech are alive and well in the council, and that councillors can have differing opinions and different political affiliations, yet work together as a cohesive team for the benefit of the local community.
I believe Ms Kosky’s legacy is best determined by the people she represented, not the council. As I said in the local newspapers following her resignation, I wish Lynne Kosky and her family well for their future. When one leaves public office they should no longer be subject to public scrutiny. They should be left alone.
Interestingly, I note the councillor who raised this motion – who does not live in the Altona electorate but lives in the seat of Williamstown – didn’t raise a similar motion congratulating Steve Bracks for his long and distinguished service following his resignation as Member for Williamstown and Premier of Victoria in July 2007. It therefore seems strange she would raise this motion but it is up to the community and perhaps the local media to comment on her possible motives.
I am looking forwards, not backwards. Lynne Kosky does not need the thanks or otherwise of this council.
As the Councillor for Altona, I look forward to working with the new Member for Altona irrespective of their political affiliation. I especially look forward to the new member vigilantly working towards addressing the inequities between the eastern and western suburbs so perfectly exemplified by the landscaping and sound attenuation along our freeways. Some of the many issues the new Member for Altona will have to address include:
•the frequency, reliability and capacity of our public transport services (including the reintroduction of direct services to and from the city loop at peak times, the upgrade of Aircraft Station, improved parking at Seaholme Station);
•the quality and capacity of our hospitals;
•increasing police resources so that they can provide a permanent police presence based in Altona over summer, install CCTV at all train stations, Pier St and the Altona Beach, and upgrade the Laverton Police Station so that it remains open 24 hours a day (the Victorian Police Association recognise more police are needed in the area);
•increased funding for services for the elderly and people with disabilities;
•assisting council with funding for community facilities including sporting facilities and shared paths;
•upgrading arterial roads such as Point Cook Road and the duplication of Central Avenue/Queen Street in Altona Meadows;
•Reintroducing years 10, 11 and 12 to Altona (it is a disgrace we don’t have a public school delivering years 10, 11 or 12 in all of Altona, Altona Meadows, Seaholme and Seabrook, forcing families in these areas to go to Williamstown and Altona North); and
•Upgrading the Altona foreshore and the Altona Boat Ramp/Safe Harbour (compare how much the state government allocates to all the beaches in the eastern suburbs compared to the two beaches in the western suburbs).
The new Member for Altona will have much to do and I am committed to supporting them achieving these goals. The community expects this from us – not gratuitous praise and back patting to former Members of Parliament immediately after they resign.
I will therefore vote against this motion.”

Local Westy. I totally agree that the Council should be seperate and apart from State govt. but whilst we have so many members of the Labor party in Councils what would you expect. Have they done anything about the single rail line in the area.I have had calls from people saying about the beaches being so unsafe in Altona in the summer they will not go there after dark.Many times there is only one Police Van from Williamstown and Altona.I will not be surprised if when the New station at tarniet is open the they close the Laverton station.
How about the money spent before the last two elections on The Box Hill Hospital and compare it with what has been spent on Western suburbs Hospitals.
I think Mrs Jubbs Ted Bailueas mother in law comment on “she is happy with Labor in the East”. Why wouldn’t she that is where the taxpayers money from the West goes.
